A handicap tub to shower conversion turns a bathtub into an accessible shower for people who use a wheelchair or walker, or who need help transferring. It gives households in Makawao, HI a safer way to bathe with less climbing and lifting.
What the Project Involves
Planning starts with how the person bathes: rolling in, transferring to a seat, or standing with support. The tub is removed and a low-threshold or barrier-free base is installed, with waterproofing that covers the full shower area. Walls are reinforced with blocking so grab bars can be mounted securely. Doorway width, floor space, and control locations are measured at this stage.
Typical features include a wider opening, a fold-down or fixed seat, a handheld shower on a slide bar, and controls placed within easy reach. Floors should be slip-resistant and drain well. Accessibility standards such as the ADA mainly apply to public and commercial buildings, but many installers use them as a reference for homes. Confirm what applies in Makawao, HI before design is final.
When This Option Makes Sense
- A wheelchair, walker, or transfer bench is part of daily bathing.
- A caregiver helps with bathing and needs room to work.
- Mobility needs are expected to change over time.
- The current tub is no longer safe or practical to use.
What Affects the Price
The type of entry, the width of the opening, seat and bar options, plumbing changes, and wall and floor materials all shape the price. Rebuilding the floor for a flush entry costs more than installing a low-profile base. Exact pricing for a handicap tub to shower conversion depends on the project and a quote.
